Accept the Challenge
Be part of a group, lead by qualified Southbound Adventures guides, who will experience together the excitement of exploration and achievement in this fantastic area.
The Overland Track is one of the best known and most popular long
distance walking tracks in Tasmania. It extends some 80 kilometres from
Cradle Mountain to Lake St Claire and winds through some of Tasmania’s
most spectacular alpine scenery.
Plan
to take 9 days of your holidays doing something really worthwhile.
These 9 days will allow sufficient time to explore along the way; you
may explore Waterfall Valley, feel the absolute satisfaction of
climbing to the top of Cradle Mountain, Barn Bluff or Mount Ossa, (the
highest mountain in Tasmania), and view ancient alpine flora in the
heath lands.
What we provide
Pre-trip parent and student briefings, return economy airfares, all
internal transport costs in Tasmania, National Park entry and Permit
Fees, two Southbound Adventures guides with Wilderness First Aid
qualifications , all meals from evening day 1 to breakfast on the final
day, lightweight expedition tent, rucksack, Rain jacket, sleeping mat,
water bottles, Trangia stove and fuel, all cooking utensils, hostel
accommodation and visit to the Roman Baths on the last evening in
Launceston.
The overland Track - Tasmania Cradle Mountain to Lake St. Clair
We plan to take 8 days to complete this trek, allowing sufficient time
for exploring along the way. This time frame also provides our group
with adequate resting periods. Most walkers complete the trek North to
South, and we will also follow this route. Track altitude is generally
between 800 and 1,200 metres so be prepared for cooler and less stable
weather. There is no requirement for being an accomplished bush walker,
but a degree of stamina is encouraged as an average walking distance of
10 kilometres a day is planned.
Many
people, including us, choose to walk during the December to February
period. This time of year offers generally finer and warmer weather, up
to 30c on some days, but be warned as sudden changes to weather
conditions do occur with little notice. White Christmases in the region are not uncommon. Unfortunately we cannot guarantee good weather so be well prepared for all possible eventualities.
Overnight accommodation will be in tents at campsites along The
Overland Track. The campsites are located near huts, which provide
basic toilet facilities and water supply.
Cooking during the trek will be on portable fuel (trangia) stoves. The
Cradle Mountain - Lake St Clair National Park is a declared "Fuel Stove
Only Area" - campfires are not permitted within the park. All rubbish
created by our group must be carried out of the National Park area.
